Eight candidates have made the shortlist for the coaching position of the Fijiana 15s rugby team. This opportunity arose following the resignation of Mosese Rauluni after last November’s tour. In total, 35 applicants sought the role.
Rovereto Nayacalevu, the chief executive of Fiji Rugby Union, provided insights into the ongoing recruitment process, mentioning that the organization is currently awaiting work permit clarifications before they can officially announce the selected coach. “We are in the process of getting clearance for work permits. Once that is completed, we will be able to announce our chosen coaches,” Nayacalevu stated.
The position might see an overseas candidate stepping in, which would mark a change from the previous trend where coaches from the Fijian Drua women’s team transitioned into the Fijiana 15s role. Coaches like Senirusi Seruvakula, Inoke Male, and Mosese Rauluni have previously made this leap. However, Nayacalevu indicated a shift in strategy, expressing a desire for the team’s programs to be distinct, ultimately seeking a dedicated national coach for the Fijiana 15s.
With the Women’s Rugby Cup approaching in just eight months, the urgency to finalize the coach selection is intensifying. This focus on strategic and timely recruitment underscores Fiji Rugby Union’s commitment to enhancing its women’s rugby program.
In summary, as Fiji Rugby Union continues its search for the right leadership to guide the Fijiana 15s, the emphasis on separate coaching for the women’s programs could foster a more tailored and effective approach to development within the sport.
