A noteworthy influx of skilled construction workers is making its way back to Fiji to aid in the development of Vatu Talei – The Jewel, a luxurious resort slated to open in late 2026. This $230 million venture is situated on Denarau Island in Nadi and aims to create over 450 jobs for the local workforce.

Currently, around 200 workers are engaged on-site daily, many of whom have acquired valuable experience abroad and returned to apply their expertise in constructing this premier destination. The project is managed by Construction Managers Global (CMG), and its Director, Stewart Lovelock, highlighted the importance of these returning workers.

“Many of these skilled individuals have developed their talents internationally, and they are now playing a pivotal role in a project that promises to significantly impact both the local economy and the tourism sector,” Lovelock said. He also noted that there are still opportunities available for more experienced workers to join the team.

Vatu Talei – The Jewel represents a joint venture between BSP Life and Fiji Airways, showcasing innovative design concepts across nearly 10 acres. The resort will boast state-of-the-art amenities, including the largest pool in the region, a biophilic atrium, hanging gardens, and distinctive cultural experiences, alongside innovative dining and water-based adventures.

Kamal Chetty, Chief Executive of Investment Fiji, remarked on the significance of experienced Fijian workers returning home, emphasizing the project’s potential to invigorate the local economy. He stated, “This initiative has immense potential to boost job creation and facilitate skills transfer while further developing complementary sectors such as hospitality, transport, and services.” Chetty expressed optimism about the lasting benefits such projects bring to Fiji’s economy and the opportunities they create for its people.

The Vatu Talei project not only promises luxury tourism but also showcases the strength of the Fijian workforce, including the extensive skills brought back by those who have worked overseas. This development marks a hopeful chapter in Fiji’s ongoing journey toward enhancing its tourism and economic landscape.
