Fiji’s Under-20 rugby coach, Senirusi Seruvakula, is emphasizing the importance of long-term development as he prepares for the upcoming Oceania Rugby U20s Challenge and Super Rugby U20 competitions. With a focus on nurturing talent, Seruvakula is currently working with 45 players in camp, most of whom have progressed through the local Deans rugby competition. Many players are already engaged with the Fijian Drua academy and the Fiji Rugby Union’s High-Performance Unit.
Reflecting on his vision, Seruvakula aims to cultivate a new generation of players who can seamlessly transition to the senior Flying Fijians team by the age of 25. Many athletes in the current squad participated in last year’s World Rugby U20 Championship held in South Africa, marking a foundation for future national representation.
Seruvakula believes that making rugby a priority at an earlier age will combat the perception that Fijian players typically peak later in their careers, often joining the senior team at ages 28 to 30. “This is new and it takes a lot of belief and courage, but it can work,” he stated. His strategy includes a roadmap where these young talents also pass through the Fiji Warriors system before advancing to the senior team.
Currently, the team is preparing in Suva, Nadi, and Sigatoka, with overseas players contributing training videos. A fitness test is scheduled for next Tuesday, after which the final roster of 30 players will be selected by the end of the month.
The proactive approach, including open trials to scout local talent, reflects a commitment to fostering a competitive spirit within Fiji’s rugby landscape. As the team gears up for the international stage, there is hope that this focus on youth development will not only enhance performance but also solidify Fiji’s reputation in global rugby competitions.
This careful preparation and forward-thinking mentality promise an exciting future for Fijian rugby, encouraging younger players to rise through the ranks and represent their country with pride on the world stage.
