Fijian Under-20 rugby coach Senirusi Seruvakula is emphasizing a comprehensive approach to player development as his team gears up for the Oceania Rugby U20s Challenge and the Super Rugby U20 competitions. With a focus on the future, Seruvakula is currently working with a squad of 45 players, many of whom have advanced through the respected Deans rugby competition. His strategy is not just about immediate success but about cultivating talent that can transition to the senior Flying Fijians team, ideally by the age of 25.

Last year’s participation in the World Rugby U20 Championship in South Africa has provided a solid foundation for the current squad. Seruvakula is committed to changing the longstanding narrative that Fijian players tend to mature later in their careers, often breaking into the national team in their late twenties. “It’s the development that we need here in Fiji,” he stated, advocating for early engagement in competitive rugby.

Central to Seruvakula’s vision is a structured pathway that enables players to progress through the Fiji Drua academy, the Fiji Rugby Union’s High-Performance Unit, and eventually the Fiji Warriors system. He aims to build a cohesive group of players who can advance together, reaching their peak potential in time for the next U20 World Cup in 2026.

Currently, the team is training across multiple locations—Suva, Nadi, and Sigatoka—where overseas players are actively involved by sharing training videos. An important fitness test is scheduled for next week, leading to the selection of a final roster of 30 players by the end of January.

The upcoming Oceania tournament, featuring teams such as Tonga, Samoa, and Moana Pasifika, promises to be a competitive stage for the young athletes. Following this, the squad will participate in the Super Rugby U20 competition, further enhancing their international exposure.
