Fijian troops serving in the Golan Heights under the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) are reported to be safe despite the recent upheaval in Syria. This follows the swift takeover of the Syrian capital, Damascus, by rebel forces, marking a dramatic shift after over 50 years of rule under President Bashar al-Assad.

As the situation unfolds, it is believed that President Assad has sought refuge in Russia after experiencing a notable absence amid the rebel offensive. The insurgents escalated their campaign from a small region in northwest Syria and managed to overthrow the Assad regime within just 11 days.

Fijian Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, assured the public that he has been kept informed about the situation by the Commander of the Joint Task Force Command and representatives stationed in the Golan Heights. He reported that a Fijian officer previously based in Damascus has been evacuated safely to Camp Faour, underscoring the effectiveness of the peacekeeping measures in place.

Minister Tikoduadua confirmed that all Fijian personnel with UNDOF and UNTSO, including those at the headquarters, are secure and accounted for. While the operational area remains tense, there is currently no immediate threat to the Fijian peacekeepers. He reiterated that the troops are in close communication with the United Nations and other key stakeholders to closely monitor the evolving situation and that robust contingency plans are ready should there be any change in security.

Over the past weekend, operations conducted by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) in the demilitarized zone of the Golan Heights aimed at countering rebel activities did not target United Nations positions, leaving UN personnel, including those at Observation Post 71, unharmed. Additionally, initiatives are being undertaken to recover equipment affected during a recent rebel incursion.

Minister Tikoduadua highlighted the additional security measures provided by the IDF within the buffer zone, which significantly bolsters the safety of UNDOF and UNTSO personnel. Moreover, local communities near UN positions have expressed their support for the Fijian peacekeepers, advocating for stability in the region.

He commended the incredible commitment and work of the troops in such challenging circumstances, illustrating Fiji’s enduring dedication to promoting international peace and security.

This situation showcases the resilience and adaptability of peacekeeping forces amid conflict and turmoil, reflecting a hopeful outlook for continued peace efforts in conflict zones. The dedication exhibited by the Fijian troops is a testament to their role in fostering stability and security in the region, which could lead to a brighter future for both the local communities and international peace efforts.
