Fijian troops serving in the Golan Heights as part of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) are reported to be safe amid the recent turbulence in Syria. This follows a remarkable development in the country, where rebels have successfully overtaken the Syrian capital, Damascus, marking the end of over 50 years of rule by President Bashar al-Assad, who is believed to have fled to Russia seeking asylum.
The offensive by militant insurgents began in a small region in northwestern Syria and has rapidly led to Assad’s apparent downfall in a matter of days. Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, stated that he has been kept informed about the situation by the Commander of Joint Task Force Command and representatives stationed in the Golan Heights.
Tikoduadua confirmed that a Fijian officer who was previously in Damascus has safely returned to Camp Faour, demonstrating the effectiveness of the peacekeeping measures in place. The Minister assured that all Fijian troops attached to UNDOF and UNTSO, including those at their headquarters, are secure and accounted for. While the operational area remains calm yet tense, he indicated that there is no immediate threat to Fijian peacekeepers.
They are maintaining close coordination with the United Nations and relevant stakeholders to monitor the evolving security landscape. Furthermore, should the situation change, robust contingency plans are ready to protect their personnel.
Over the weekend, operations by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) in the demilitarized zone of the Golan Heights were implemented to address rebel activities. Tikoduadua emphasized that UN positions were not directly targeted, and all personnel remained unharmed. Efforts are also being made to recover equipment that was temporarily impacted by recent events.
He noted the enhanced security provided by the IDF in the buffer zone, which has significantly contributed to the safety of UN personnel. Local communities surrounding UN positions have shown strong support for Fijian peacekeepers and are actively participating in maintaining stability in the region.
Tikoduadua expressed his admiration for the dedication of the troops operating in such challenging conditions, highlighting Fiji’s enduring commitment to international peace and security. This situation not only underlines the importance of peacekeeping missions but also showcases the resilience and cooperation among nations in the face of adversity.
In summary, Fijian troops remain secure amid significant changes in Syria, reflecting robust contingency planning and international cooperation in peacekeeping efforts. The solidarity shown by local communities further emphasizes a collective desire for stability in the region, which is a hopeful sign for future peace initiatives.
