Fijian troops stationed in the Golan Heights as part of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) are reported to be safe following the recent political upheaval in Syria. This comes in the wake of significant developments, including the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, after over 50 years of rule. Rebel forces captured the capital, Damascus, completing a remarkable advance in under two weeks, leading to speculation that President Assad has fled to Russia for asylum.
Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, confirmed that he has received updates from the Commander of Joint Task Force Command regarding the safety of Fijian personnel. He highlighted that a Fijian officer who was previously stationed in Damascus has successfully returned to Camp Faour, which underscores the effectiveness of Fiji’s peacekeeping measures.
Minister Tikoduadua reassured the public that all Fijian troops with UNDOF and UNTSO, including those at the Camp Faour headquarters, are secure and accounted for, despite the prevailing tensions in the area. He stated that there is currently no immediate threat to the Fijian peacekeepers, and that robust contingency plans are in place to protect personnel if the security landscape shifts.
In recent days, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) conducted operations in the demilitarized zone of the Golan Heights to counter the activities of rebel groups. The Minister noted that United Nations positions remained unharmed during these operations, with personnel, including those at Observation Post 71, not in danger. The IDF’s actions have added a layer of security, thereby enhancing safety for UN personnel.
Local communities near the UN positions have expressed their support for the Fijian peacekeepers, collaborating to maintain stability in the region. Tikoduadua praised the dedication of the troops, emphasizing that their commitment to peace and security reflects Fiji’s historical contributions to international peacekeeping efforts.
This positive update not only ensures the continued safety of Fijian personnel but also highlights the collaborative spirit within the region, as local communities and international forces work together to foster stability amidst uncertainty. It is a testament to the importance of peace efforts and the resilience of those who stand committed to protecting those ideals.
