Fijian troops deployed in the Golan Heights, working under the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO), are reportedly safe following significant developments in Syria. This stability comes after a rapid offensive by rebel forces that led to the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s longstanding regime, which had lasted over half a century, with the Syrian capital, Damascus, captured in less than two weeks. Reports suggest that President Assad has fled to Russia seeking asylum.

Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, stated that he has been continuously updated on the situation by military commanders stationed in the region. An officer from Fiji who was previously stationed in Damascus has recently returned to Camp Faour safely, underscoring the effectiveness of evacuation protocols in place for peacekeeping troops.

Minister Tikoduadua reassured that all Fijian personnel with UNDOF and UNTSO are secure and accounted for, although the overall atmosphere remains calm yet tense. He emphasized that there is currently no immediate threat to Fijian peacekeepers, and the nation is in close coordination with the United Nations and other relevant entities to monitor the situation closely.

Over the weekend, operations were conducted by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) in the demilitarized zone of the Golan Heights to address rebel activities. Notably, United Nations positions were not directly targeted, and UN personnel, including those at Observation Post 71, remained unharmed. The IDF’s increased security efforts within the buffer zone have bolstered the safety of peacekeeping personnel, and nearby local communities have shown their support, helping to sustain stability in the area.

Minister Tikoduadua praised the dedication of Fijian troops as they operate under challenging conditions, highlighting Fiji’s enduring commitment to international peace and security.

This situation not only reflects the significant geopolitical changes occurring in the region but also underscores the importance of peacekeeping forces like those from Fiji. The rapid response and successful coordination showcase a commitment to maintaining peace and protecting personnel, even amid turmoil. This dedication reinforces the international community’s trust in Fiji’s role in fostering stability and security worldwide.
