Fijian Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua has assured that Fijian soldiers serving in the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) are not impacted by the recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East. During a parliamentary session this week, he highlighted that only one Fijian officer is stationed with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and additional personnel are actively engaged with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO).

Minister Tikoduadua emphasized that the safety and preparedness of the troops are paramount, with strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures and robust contingency plans in place for any potential evacuations. He mentioned that the Ministry maintains consistent communication with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces headquarters and that operational support is being overseen by the joint taskforce commander at Blackrock.

The minister reiterated the Coalition Government’s commitment to the well-being of peacekeepers, stating that daily situation reports are being received and the military is equipped to respond quickly to any challenges. Ongoing discussions with various governments, including the United Arab Emirates, aim to facilitate the temporary deployment of RFMF troops and equipment to bolster readiness.

Additionally, Tikoduadua announced that a government delegation is set to visit the Middle East early next year to assess the situation, evaluate reinforcement strategies, and express gratitude for the ongoing support provided to Fijian peacekeepers. He also noted the potential deployment of seven out of fourteen Bushmasters to the UNDOF area, despite challenges posed by vehicle entry restrictions from both Syrian and Israeli authorities.

This proactive approach from the Fijian government showcases a robust framework for maintaining peacekeeping operations while prioritizing the safety of its military personnel. The anticipated delegation visit signifies a commitment to not only evaluate but also to strengthen international partnerships in peacekeeping efforts.

In summary, all Fijian peacekeepers remain safe and prepared amidst regional tensions, demonstrating Fiji’s dedication to international peace and security.
