Salanieta Cereivalu from Lomaiviti has made headlines by breaking the junior girls javelin record at the Suva Zone One Athletics competition. The Year 10 student at Ratu Sukuna Memorial High School achieved an impressive throw of 40.18 meters, surpassing the previous record of 30.44 meters, which had stood since 2010, held by Suzie Aluwesi of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School.
In addition to this significant accomplishment, Cereivalu clinched a gold medal in the sub-junior javelin at both the 2024 Zone and Fiji Finals, showcasing her talent and dedication to the sport.
Moreover, the competition also saw remarkable performances from other young athletes, including Rokomusuka Uluiburotukula from International School Suva, who set a new record in the sub-junior boys high jump by clearing a height of 1.82 meters. Uluiburotukula’s recent achievements, alongside Cereivalu’s record-breaking throw, highlight a burgeoning era of athletic excellence among young Fijians.
The prevailing trend of young athletes setting records—similar to the successes seen with Rusiate Matai, who recently established a national high jump record—is fostering a renewed sense of pride and motivation within Fijian sports. These emerging stars not only represent hope for future successes but also inspire their peers to pursue their athletic dreams with resilience and determination.
The accomplishments of such talented individuals signal a bright future for athletics in Fiji, encouraging a generation of young athletes to aim high and break barriers.
