Francis Bakaniceva, a 17-year-old athlete from International School Suva, is thrilled to represent Fiji at the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Palau, scheduled from June 29 to July 9. Bakaniceva will be competing in the men’s 200 meters event after recently securing a gold medal at the Fiji Finals competition.
He expressed immense pride in his achievements, particularly as his mother, Kelera Bakaniceva, has been a steadfast supporter following the passing of his father. “Everything I do out here is for her and her hard work, also representing my family,” he stated. His gratitude extends beyond his family, as he also credits his accomplishments to divine strength.
Bakaniceva hopes that his participation in the Mini Games serves as motivation for other aspiring athletes at his school and beyond, encouraging them to pursue their dreams, whether in sports or other passions. “If they can see someone their age reaching regional levels, hopefully, that inspires them to aim high in whatever they choose,” he remarked.
With ambitions set on breaking records at next year’s Coca-Cola Games, he emphasizes the importance of mental resilience in athletics. “If athletes don’t set impossible goals, there’s no point in trying to break them,” he affirmed, recognizing that an athlete’s progress is often influenced by their mindset and the pressures they experience.
Representing Fiji at the Pacific Mini Games stands as a pivotal achievement in Bakaniceva’s athletic career. “I’m hoping that it’s a stable foundation for achieving a strong track career, and I hope Team Fiji performs excellently for our nation,” he concluded, embodying the spirit of hope and determination shared among Fiji’s athletic community.
The commitment of athletes like Bakaniceva reflects a broader promise for Fiji as it prepares for the Mini Games, amplifying national pride and anticipation for the celebrations of athletic excellence on an international stage.
