Fijian Teen Makes Waves as Student Leader in the U.S.

Deborah Selenia Vasuilakeba, a 17-year-old leader from Namata Village in Tailevu, is making a significant impact at Everett High School in Everett, Washington, where she serves as the Associated Student Body (ASB) president. With a student population of 1,606 from grades 9 to 12, Deborah’s role is a point of pride for her family back in Fiji, where her parents reside.

Under the care of her aunt Selenia and uncle Aseri Kunawave in the U.S., Deborah expressed that her candidacy for ASB president was inspired by encouragement from fellow students and teachers. “Before I ran for the position, I was unaware of the impact I had on the school community. It was a revelation when I found out on February 29 that I had won,” she said, emphasizing her joy and nervousness at receiving the majority of votes. “Winning was affirming, and it made me realize that the Lord has a plan for me.”

Despite being born in the U.S., Deborah embraces her Fijian heritage, proudly identifying as a daughter of Tailevu. Last month, on September 4, she was elected as the president of the student body, having attended Everett High School since her freshman year in 2021.

Her mother, Ana Gasaucalayawa, described Deborah as a cheerful and confident child who always sought to bring joy to those around her. Known as a peacemaker, Deborah has been actively involved in various school activities, including singing the American national anthem at volleyball and football games, as well as during a City Baseball Game.

Recently, Deborah and her team participated in a leadership camp organized by the school district in Mt Adams, where they engaged in training activities with around 500 students from various schools, all without phones or gadgets. Deborah found this experience transformative. “Initially, I was terrified of meeting new people, but the next six days were some of the best of my life,” she shared, highlighting the connections made during the camp and the lessons learned about embracing challenges.

On October 15, Deborah was recognized as one of three Rotary Club of Everett’s Students of the Month for October. This accolade celebrates outstanding high school students for their achievements and potential contributions. One of her teachers noted, “Deborah leads with love, and her positivity draws others to her.” Her ASB advisor stated that Deborah is unique, as her peers consistently applaud and cheer for her whenever she is introduced.

When asked for advice for young people, she emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive individuals and maintaining a relationship with one’s faith. “Lean on those who support you in moments of need, but also rely on the Father! Pray for joy daily, and you will notice a difference,” she advised.
