Fijian Teen Leader Inspires Change in Washington School

Deborah Selenia Vasuilakeba, 17, is a committed leader focused on creating a positive influence in her school and community. Hailing from Namata Village in Tailevu and linked to Nasavu Village in Deuba, she serves as the Associated Student Body (ASB) president at Everett High School in Everett, Washington, U.S., which has a student body of 1,606 students from grades 9 to 12. Her achievement as a Fijian student brings significant pride to her family.

While her parents reside in Fiji, Deborah is cared for by her aunt, Selenia, and uncle, Aseri Kunawave, in the U.S. She shared that encouragement from fellow students and teachers prompted her to run for the ASB presidency. “Before I contested the position, I didn’t realize the impact I had on my peers and teachers. Upon learning I won on February 29, I was filled with joy and a sense of responsibility, understanding that the Lord has a plan for my life,” she expressed.

Deborah, who was born in the U.S., proudly identifies with her Fijian roots and considers herself a daughter of Tailevu. She was elected president of the student body at Everett High School on September 4, having attended the school since Year 9 in 2021.

Her mother, Ana Gasaucalayawa, describes Deborah as a joyful and confident individual. “Growing up, she was always cheerful and loved seeing everyone happy. Known as a peacemaker, she strives for unity among children. Deborah is also talented in singing and has performed the American National Anthem at various school events and games,” she said.

Recently, Deborah and her fellow student body officials participated in a leadership camp organized by the school district at Mt. Adams, where they were disconnected from phones and gadgets. Nearly 500 students from different schools attended the camp to receive training for their roles. Deborah found the experience transformative. “Initially, I was scared to meet new people, but those six days turned out to be the best of my life, providing invaluable lessons and lifelong connections,” she said.

In addition to her leadership roles, Deborah was recognized as one of three Rotary Club of Everett’s Students of the Month for October. The Rotary Club honors outstanding high school students every month for their achievements and potential. One teacher remarked, “Deborah leads with love and her kindness and positivity draw others toward her.” The ASB Advisor stated, “Deborah is the only president in over 15 years who receives spontaneous applause from her peers whenever she is introduced.”

When asked to provide advice to young people, Deborah emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive individuals. “Remember that there will be people who support you and others who may not. Lean on your supporters and also on your faith. Pray for joy each day, and you will see the positive changes in yourself and others,” she advised.
