Fijian Teen Emerges as Inspiring Leader in U.S. School

Deborah Selenia Vasuilakeba, a 17-year-old student from Namata Village in Tailevu, is making waves as the Associated Student Body (ASB) president at Everett High School in Washington, U.S. With her family ties to Nasavu Village in Deuba, Deborah represents a student body of 1,606 students in grades 9 to 12, and her leadership is a source of pride for her family back in Fiji.

Under the care of her aunt, Selenia, and uncle Aseri Kunawave in the U.S., Deborah was encouraged by peers and teachers to run for ASB president. “Before I ran for the position, I was unaware of the impact I had on my school,” she shared. Her overwhelming victory on February 29, winning with a substantial number of votes, filled her with joy and determination, underscoring her belief that “the Lord has a plan for me.”

Despite being born in the U.S., Deborah takes pride in her Fijian heritage. She was recently elected as ASB president on September 4, having joined the school in Year 9 in 2021.

Deborah’s mother, Ana Gasaucalayawa, described her as a cheerful and loving child who always aimed to unite her peers and alleviate sadness. “She was known as a peacemaker in her school and wanted all children around her to love each other and be united,” said Ms. Gasaucalayawa. Deborah is also a talented singer, having performed the American National Anthem at various school events, including volleyball and football games.

Recently, Deborah and her student body officers attended a leadership camp at Mt. Adams, designed to prepare 500 students from different schools for their leadership roles. Emphasizing the camp as a transformative experience, she stated, “The first day I was terrified about meeting new people, but the next six days became the best of my life.”

Additionally, she was recognized as one of the Rotary Club of Everett’s Students of the Month for October, honoring her contributions and potential. Teachers praise her for her kindness and positivity, highlighting the enthusiastic support she garners from her peers.

In sharing advice with young people, Deborah emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive individuals while also seeking guidance through prayer. She encouraged others to “lean on the Father” and ask for joy to notice positive changes in their lives.
