Two young talents from the Eastern Saints Rugby Club are currently in Australia to represent Fiji in the International Tag Series (ITS). Jordan Gucake and Josefa Mara were invited to join the Fiji Oztag team, set to compete at the C.ex Coffs International Stadium in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, from August 7-10.

The players flew out from Fiji on July 26 and have begun training with their new teammates, predominantly Australian-based players. This opportunity was facilitated by Luke Manahan, the general manager of Australian Oztag, who spotted the potential of some Eastern Saints players during his visit to Suva in May, where he conducted coaching clinics.

This marks a historic moment for Fijian Oztag, as it is the first time players from Fiji have received an official invitation to participate in such a prestigious tournament. Coach Mesake Nanovu expressed pride in Gucake and Mara, who previously contributed to the club’s success by winning the Eastern Saints Oztag team’s title at last year’s Fijian Cup in Sigatoka.

Nanovu noted the ongoing development of Oztag in Fiji, highlighting discussions with the Fiji National Sports Commission to formally establish Fiji Tag as a national body. The endeavor represents a pioneering effort to raise awareness and participation in the sport.

Encouraging local youth, Nanovu stated that Oztag is an enjoyable and safe way to learn vital rugby skills, such as running, evasion, passing, and kicking. He invited more youngsters to join local clubs as they prepare for the upcoming Fijian Cup later this year.

This initiative showcases the expanding opportunities for rugby development in Fiji, as the integration of local talents into international competitions fosters growth and nurtures the next generation of sports stars. The enthusiasm surrounding this event reflects a hopeful future for rugby in Fiji, presenting new avenues for young players to shine on the global stage.
