Fijian Student Shines as ASB President in the U.S.

Deborah Selenia Vasuilakeba, 17, is a dedicated leader aiming to create a meaningful difference in her school and community. Hailing from Namata Village in Tailevu and with family ties to Nasavu Village in Deuba, she is currently the Associated Student Body (ASB) president at Everett High School in Everett, Washington.

With a student population of 1,606 spanning Grades 9 to 12, Deborah’s role as a Fijian student leader is a significant source of pride for her family. While her parents reside in Fiji, Deborah is under the care of her aunt Selenia and uncle Aseri Kunawave in the U.S.

“In running for this position, I was encouraged by many students and teachers,” Deborah shared. “Before contesting, I wasn’t aware of the impact I had on my school community. On February 29, when I learned I had won, I realized my influence was significant to many students and staff.”

She expressed a mix of joy and nervousness upon receiving the most votes and recognized that she is fulfilling a purpose in her life. Although she was born in the U.S., she takes great pride in her Fijian heritage and identities as a daughter of Tailevu. Deborah was elected president of the student body on September 4, having attended Everett High since Year 9 in 2021.

In Fiji, her mother, Ana Gasaucalayawa, describes Deborah as joyful and confident. “She has always been cheerful and supportive, known for wanting to bring happiness to those around her,” said Ms. Gasaucalayawa. Deborah, who is also a talented singer, has performed the American National Anthem at various school events, including volleyball and football games.

As part of her leadership duties, she attended a leadership camp organized by the school district at Mt. Adams, where around 500 students participated in training without any electronic devices. Deborah called the experience transformative and initially felt anxious about meeting new people. However, the ensuing days turned out to be some of the best in her life, allowing her to learn valuable skills and forge lasting connections.

Additionally, she received recognition as one of the three Rotary Club of Everett’s Student of the Month for October, celebrating her accomplishments and potential. One teacher remarked, “Deborah leads with love,” highlighting her positivity and kindness. Her ASB Advisor noted that she is the first ASB President in over 15 years to evoke spontaneous applause and cheers from her peers whenever she is introduced, reflecting her deep connection with students and staff alike.

When advising young people, Deborah said, “Understand that there are those who will support and those who may not. Lean on your supporters in tough times and rely on faith. Pray for joy daily, and you will notice a difference.”
