Deborah Selenia Vasuilakeba, a 17-year-old from Namata Village in Tailevu, is making waves as the Associated Student Body (ASB) president at Everett High School in Everett, Washington. With her family ties to Nasavu Village in Deuba, she represents her Fijian heritage with pride as she leads a student body of 1,606 students.

Living in the U.S. under the care of her aunt Selenia and uncle Aseri Kunawave while her parents reside in Fiji, Deborah was encouraged to run for the ASB position by fellow students and teachers. Reflecting on her election victory on February 29, she expressed how it revealed her significant impact on her school community.

“Winning with the biggest number of votes brought me so much joy and nervousness,” Deborah said. “I realized that the Lord has a plan for me in this life.”

Although she was born in the U.S., she identifies strongly with her Fijian roots and is a proud daughter of Tailevu. Deborah was elected as president of the student body on September 4, having attended the school since Year 9 in 2021.

Her mother, Ana Gasaucalayawa, describes her as a cheerful and loving individual who never wanted to see others sad. Known for her peacemaking abilities, Deborah is also a talented singer who has performed the American National Anthem at various sports events.

Recently, Deborah attended a leadership camp organized by her school district in Mt Adams alongside nearly 500 students from various schools. The offline camp provided a unique environment for personal growth. “The six days in the forest with no service taught me how to embrace life’s challenges and lead with influence,” she shared.

Additionally, Deborah was recognized as one of the Rotary Club of Everett’s Students of the Month for October, highlighting her contributions and leadership skills. Her ASB advisor noted the admiration she has earned from her peers, with spontaneous applause greeting her whenever she is introduced.

When asked about advice for young people, Deborah emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive individuals and maintaining a strong connection to faith. “Pray and ask for joy each day, and you will notice the difference,” she advised.
