Fijian Starlet Maleli Nauvasi Joins Drua Development Program!

Maleli Nauvasi, a promising young talent, has been accepted into the Fijian Drua development program following his impressive showing in the Vodafone Deans competition. His crucial role in helping Queen Victoria School secure the under-18 title this year drew the attention of the Drua selectors. Nauvasi’s remarkable performance in the final against Nasinu Secondary School earned him the Player of the Match accolade.

His abilities were further highlighted during his time with the Fiji Schoolboys U18 team, where he contributed to two victories against the Australian Schoolboys U18. Nauvasi has displayed versatility on the field, having played multiple positions, including flyhalf, wing, and fullback at QVS, showcasing both his adaptability and skill.

Expressing his excitement about the new opportunity, Nauvasi conveyed his eagerness to be part of the Drua team and his appreciation for the chance he has been given. Ifereimi Rawaqa, the development and skills coach for the Fijian Drua, commended the young athlete hailing from Dratabu in Nadi, acknowledging his natural talent, discipline, and impressive performances, and showing confidence in his potential to succeed in professional rugby.

“I’m delighted to welcome Maleli Nauvasi to our Drua development program. He has shown exceptional promise, not only through his natural talent but also his discipline on the field,” Rawaqa remarked. He added, “Nauvasi has proven himself as a standout performer in the Deans and also in the Fiji Schoolboys U18. We are excited to be part of his continued growth and journey in rugby.”

Baden Stephenson, general manager of the Fijian Drua, emphasized the significance of Nauvasi’s commitment to the club, particularly given interest from overseas teams. His decision to remain with Drua indicates his dedication and his goal to advance from the U18 level to the Flying Fijians.

Nauvasi joins a development squad that includes 10 other talented players. This program provides an attractive opportunity that includes a salary, training with the Super Rugby Pacific team, and involvement in provincial competitions such as the Skipper Cup while also engaging in Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific. The initiative aims to equip these players with essential resources and coaching to facilitate their transition to the professional level and enable them to make a substantial impact in the future.
