Fiji’s Flying Fijians fullback Vuate Karawalevu has garnered attention for his impressive defensive play and effective kicking during the recent victory over Samoa. Glen Jackson, head coach of the Fijian Drua, hinted at the potential for Karawalevu, a talented player from Dravuwalu in Kadavu, to join the team next season.
Karawalevu, who previously captained Marist Brothers High School’s rugby team and won a gold medal in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics, is seen as a valuable addition. Jackson expressed confidence that his inclusion would strengthen the backline.
At just 23 years old, Karawalevu played for the Kaiviti Silktails in 2021 and was part of the Fiji Bati squad for the 2021 Rugby World Cup. He is currently under a two-season contract with the Waratahs.
Jackson noted that 14 players from the Drua participated in the Flying Fijians’ impressive 42-16 win against Samoa in their opening match of the Pacific Nations Cup on August 23 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. He also mentioned that the Drua will hold a pre-season camp in Kadavu, where improvements will be made to their base to create a better environment for developing top players.
The return of Joseva Tamani, who can play as both a back row and lock, is seen as a positive development for the club. New signings Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou have also been added to the team, with Jackson praising Ravai’s experience as a valuable asset for mentoring younger players.
Additionally, a new center combination will feature Iosefo Masi alongside former Racing 92 center Tabuavou, who showcased his speed, defensive skills, and determination in his second test appearance against Samoa last week.
Baden Stephenson, the interim general manager of Fijian Drua, announced plans for a 10s tournament scheduled for December 13, aiming to make it an international event that will also include participation from Skipper teams.
