FLYING Fijians lock Temo Mayanavanua has announced his intention to leave Northampton Saints at the end of the current season to return to Fiji, with plans to join the Fijian Drua. This marks a significant development in Mayanavanua’s career, particularly after he has made a lasting impact during his time at the Saints.

Arriving at the club after the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Mayanavanua quickly became a valued member of the team. He made 35 appearances, scoring one try, and played a key role in their success, including winning the Gallagher Premiership title and reaching the Investec Champions Cup Final. Upon reflecting on his time in Northampton, he expressed deep gratitude for how the club and fans embraced him and his family, showing warmth and support during his transition.

The decision to return home comes after nearly eight years abroad for him and six for his wife. Mayanavanua emphasized the emotional weight of family connections that grew stronger during a recent visit back to Fiji, particularly the joy of seeing his son bond with cousins. This sentiment aligns with a broader trend of Fijian players returning to their roots, where there now exist substantial career opportunities in local rugby, such as with the professional Fijian Drua team.

Director of Rugby Phil Dowson acknowledged Mayanavanua’s contributions to the Saints, highlighting the void his departure will leave both on and off the field. Mayanavanua’s return is anticipated to not only bolster the Fijian Drua but also inspire younger athletes in Fiji, as experienced players contribute to the growth of local rugby.

As Fijian rugby continues to evolve with the return of talented athletes from overseas, the potential for nurturing local talent increases, thereby enhancing the competitive landscape and fostering a strong community around the sport. With Mayanavanua’s transition, there is hope for a bright future for both the Fijian Drua and the broader fabric of rugby in Fiji.
