Deborah Selenia Vasuilakeba, a 17-year-old leader from Namata Village in Tailevu, is making a significant impact in her school and community from her position as the Associated Student Body (ASB) president at Everett High School in Washington, U.S. With her family connections to Nasavu Village in Deuba, Deborah’s leadership as a Fijian student is a source of pride for her relatives, who reside in Fiji, while she lives with her aunt Selenia and uncle Aseri Kunawave in the U.S.

Deborah was encouraged by fellow students and teachers to run for the ASB president position, and she was surprised to discover her influence within the school. On February 29, she learned that she had won the election, securing the majority of votes, which filled her with joy and nervousness. She believes strongly that her life has a purpose shaped by a higher plan.

Although born in the U.S., Deborah takes pride in her Fijian heritage and identity as a daughter of Tailevu. She was elected president on September 4, continuing her journey at Everett High School, where she has studied since Year 9 in 2021.

Deborah’s mother, Ana Gasaucalayawa, describes her daughter as cheerful and confident. She recalls Deborah’s nurturing nature and her role as a peacemaker among her peers, always wanting to spread love and unity. A talented singer, Deborah has performed the American National Anthem numerous times at school sports events.

Recently, Deborah and her fellow student body officials attended a leadership camp in Mt Adams, which offered a break from technology and focused on personal growth. With around 500 students from various schools, the camp was a transformative experience for her. She spoke about her initial fears but ultimately described the six-day event as one of the best experiences of her life, emphasizing the value of embracing discomfort and leading with influence.

Additionally, Deborah was recognized as one of the three Rotary Club of Everett’s Students of the Month for October, an honor celebrating outstanding achievements among local high school students. Her teachers commend her compassionate leadership style, emphasizing her ability to foster a positive environment.

In offering advice to young people, Deborah encourages them to recognize the importance of surrounding themselves with supportive individuals and to seek guidance through prayer, emphasizing that daily requests for joy can lead to meaningful changes in life.
