Flying Fijians hooker Sam Matavesi is reportedly set to part ways with Lyon Rugby at the conclusion of the 2025 French Top 14 season. Although the 33-year-old had signed a contract with the club that extends until June 2026, the French newspaper Le Progres indicates that an agreement has been reached to terminate his contract early.
This decision follows Lyon Rugby’s recent contract extension of former Racing 92 hooker Camille Chat, which has led to speculation about Matavesi’s future with the team. Additionally, Vannes Rugby had shown interest in recruiting Matavesi, but it remains unclear whether he will choose to extend his rugby career or entertain other options.
This potential departure aligns with a broader trend of change among Fijian players in the French Top 14. Approximately 22 Fijian athletes are expected to leave their current clubs as many contracts are set to expire or have been terminated, leading them to seek new opportunities for the upcoming 2025 season. High-profile exits include captain Waisea Nayacalevu, who is joining Sale Sharks from Toulon, and Inia Tabuavou, who is set to move from Racing 92 to the Fijian Drua.
The changing landscape in rugby provides an exciting opportunity for athletes to explore new challenges and contribute to different teams, potentially enhancing the competitiveness of the sport in various leagues.
