Ponipate Loganimasi made a significant decision to pursue rugby instead of following the traditional path to university. With the unwavering support of his father, Joeli Kalougata, Loganimasi’s dedication has propelled him to remarkable heights within just two years of joining the national sevens rugby team.
This year, he achieved the impressive feat of winning an Olympic silver medal as a key player on the men’s rugby sevens squad. Adding to his accolades, Loganimasi was the sole Fijian selected for the prestigious World Rugby Men’s Sevens Dream Team of the Year, a recognition that underscores his talent on the global stage.
Loganimasi’s standout performances continued during the World Rugby’s Pacific Nations Cup, where he made his debut for the Flying Fijians against Japan. His two tries contributed to a dominant victory of 41-17, securing the Pacific Nations Cup title for Fiji. In a further testament to his growth, he recently signed with the Fijian Drua in October.
Originally hailing from Lovoni in Ono-i-Lau and raised in his mother’s village of Nabua, Cakaudrove, the 26-year-old has embraced a variety of athletic pursuits, notably winning a gold medal in the 200m race at the Coca-Cola Games while studying at Navatu Secondary School. In addition to rugby, he also showcased his talents in indoor basketball during his high school years.
Kalougata, reflecting on his son’s journey from local sevens rugby to the international scene, expressed immense pride. He encouraged Loganimasi to seek divine guidance in his rugby career, emphasizing hard work, humility, and receptiveness to advice. He firmly stated his support for his son’s decision, underscoring how rugby could provide a sustainable future.
Loganimasi’s rapid rise in rugby not only serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes but also highlights the profound impact of family support in pursuing dreams. As he continues on this promising path, his achievements may motivate others to pursue their passions, showcasing the potential that lies within every individual when they follow their heart.
The inclusion of elite players such as Selvyn Davids, Antoine Dupont, and others alongside Loganimasi in the Dream Team emphasizes the immense talent present in rugby today, enriching the sport’s competitive landscape.
Hopeful and ambitious, Loganimasi’s journey illustrates the rewards of dedication and the belief that following one’s passion can lead to extraordinary opportunities.
