Temo Mayanavanua, a lock for the Flying Fijians, has expressed his gratitude to the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua for the opportunity to play rugby at home after spending nearly eight years abroad. Mayanavanua, who recently signed a two-year contract with the Drua, views this as a dream come true, as he has always aspired to participate in Super Rugby.
Having played for the Northampton Saints, where he made 35 appearances and scored one try, Mayanavanua’s return follows a heartfelt visit to Fiji that strengthened his desire to reconnect with his roots and family. He noted, “Returning back home is a real honor and privilege,” highlighting the chance for his family to experience the Fijian lifestyle. His debut for the Flying Fijians occurred in 2020 against Georgia, and since then, he has earned 25 caps.
Mayanavanua’s move to join the Drua reflects a broader trend among Fijian athletes returning to their homeland to enhance local rugby. This movement is seen as beneficial for the growth of the sport in Fiji, providing inspiration for younger players while strengthening domestic teams.
With the Fijian Drua preparing for the upcoming Super Rugby season, Mayanavanua’s presence is expected to significantly impact the team, bolstering both competitive performance and community engagement within rugby in Fiji. His transition symbolizes not only a new chapter in his career but also a hopeful perspective for the future of Fijian rugby as players bring their international experience back home.
