Isireli Naikelekelevesi has been nominated as the individual male athlete of the year by the Fiji Amateur Athletics Federation for the upcoming Fiji Islands Awards night, set for January 29. This nomination highlights his remarkable athletic achievements, including winning two gold medals at the South Pacific Games held in Guam in 1999. Notably, he excelled in the 800 metres, where he not only claimed the gold but also set a games and national record with a time of one minute and 49.54 seconds.

Naikelekelevesi’s leadership qualities shone during the games, especially when he stepped up to support fellow long-distance runners in the absence of a coach. His dedication and experience, gained during a year of training with other Fijian athletes in the United States, led to his selection as the long-distance captain for the Guam games. His commitment to improving his skills did not go unnoticed, as he was chosen by the Fiji Amateur Sports National Olympic Committee for further training in Australia with an eye toward qualifying for the 2000 Olympics.

Naikelekelevesi’s journey illustrates the resilience and determination found within Fiji’s athletic community, reminiscent of the ongoing achievements highlighted in recent sports awards where numerous athletes demonstrated significant accomplishments. For instance, in the 2023 Fiji Sports Awards, various nominees were recognized for their contributions to sports, showcasing the spirit of unity and ambition within the Fiji sports sector, a sentiment echoed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka who underscored the transformative power of sports in promoting national pride.

Naikelekelevesi stands as an inspiring figure, demonstrating that with dedication and support, Fijian athletes can achieve exceptional results on both local and international stages. His story reflects the bright prospects for athletics in Fiji, encouraging future generations to pursue their athletic dreams.
