Rochdale Hornets, a team in League 1, has officially announced the signing of Fijian prop Joe Taira for a third time. At 35 years old, Taira returns to the Crown Oil Arena, where he began his professional journey back in 2016, having already played 104 games for the club.
Taira made a significant impact during his first stint from 2016 to 2018, appearing in 70 matches before spending two seasons with Batley Bulldogs. He made a comeback to Rochdale in 2021, adding another 34 games to his record over the next two years. After a brief period with community club Rochdale Mayfield, Taira has now signed a one-year deal for the 2025 season.
Although he did not earn an official cap, Taira has played as a one-time international for Fiji, facing England in a World Cup warm-up match in October 2022, adding to his impressive resume.
Expressing his excitement about returning to the Hornets, Taira stated, “I’m buzzing to be back at the place I started my professional career, and I find it fitting that it’s where I will end it.” He highlighted his determination to help the team build upon their promising performance last season, in which they finished third in League 1 but were eliminated in the play-offs by Hunslet, who eventually secured promotion.
Hornets head coach Gary Thornton expressed his enthusiasm for Taira’s return, emphasizing the forward’s well-known reputation among fans and his valuable experience, which will benefit the team in the upcoming season.
This signing marks an important chapter for both Taira and Rochdale Hornets as they look toward the future with optimism. With Taira’s history with the club and a strong desire to contribute to their success, he could play a pivotal role in helping Rochdale push for greater achievements in the 2025 season.
The news of Taira’s return to the Hornets is a testament to the enduring bonds in professional sports, suggesting a bright future for the player and the team alike.
