Fijian Runner Breaks Records and Makes History at National Championships

Fijian middle-distance runner Yeshnil Karan has made a remarkable impact at the 2025 Chemist Warehouse Australian National Athletics Championships, achieving two personal bests that significantly enhance his standing in the sport. During the event, he recorded a stunning time of 9:02.08 in the 3000m steeplechase, improving his previous record by an impressive 16 seconds. This performance not only earned him an 8th place finish against a competitive field featuring multiple Australian Olympians but also secured his title as the second-fastest Fijian in the event’s history, surpassing the mark set by Olympian Davendra Rakash Singh during the 1992 Barcelona Games. Karan now trails only Usaia Sotutu, whose national record has stood since 1981.

In addition to his steeplechase success, Karan’s prowess in the 1500m event was also on display as he clocked a personal best of 3:51.14, which improved upon a record that had been in place since 1971. This achievement placed him as the second-fastest Fijian in the 1500m, trailing the longstanding national record held by Rick Kermode from 1983.

Karan’s stunning performance signifies a new era for Fijian athletics, as he not only continues to break records but also paves the way for future generations of athletes. His recent accomplishments are reminiscent of his previous performances, including his gold medal victory at the 2023 Pacific Games and his national records in various long-distance events. His consistent dedication and improvement serve as an inspiration for aspiring athletes in Fiji.

As Karan builds on this momentum, there is increasing optimism for his future prospects on the international stage. His unfaltering commitment to his sport and ability to deliver under pressure showcases the potential of Fijian athletes in global competitions. Overall, Karan embodies the spirit of resilience and hard work, offering hope and motivation for both current and future athletes in Fiji.
