Sikeli Basiyalo, a 21-year-old rising star in Fijian rugby, is set to make his debut for the Fiji men’s rugby sevens team at the upcoming Hong Kong Sevens tournament. This announcement comes as he has been named in the squad coached by Osea Kolinisau, marking a significant milestone for the former Cuvu College student.
Basiyalo joined the training squad just three weeks ago after impressing during his time with the Fijian Drua in the Coral Coast tournament. He hails from Volivoli Village in Nadroga and has maternal roots in Nabukelevu-i-ra, Kadavu. Beginning his rugby journey with Aflame Brothers, Basiyalo has demonstrated tremendous potential and commitment, earning his place in this competitive sevens environment.
In his own words, Basiyalo expressed his appreciation for learning from senior players, highlighting the intensity of the training compared to his previous experiences with the Drua. He stated, “There is a tough competition for my spot as there are many senior players who have been on the side longer and are experienced,” acknowledging how critical hard work and perseverance have been to his development.
Gratitude plays an essential role in Basiyalo’s life; he credits his family and faith for his journey and success, citing a verse from Psalms that grounds his motivation.
As he prepares to depart for Hong Kong, he and the squad, which includes seasoned players such as Jeremaia Matana, Kavekini Tanivanuakula, and Joseva Talacolo, will face formidable opponents in their pool. The team’s combined experience and youthful energy signal a promising outlook for Fiji in this international competition.
This development not only spotlights Basiyalo’s individual progress but also reflects Fiji’s ongoing commitment to nurturing young talent alongside seasoned athletes. The mix of fresh energy with veteran experience offers hope for continued success in Fijian rugby as they step onto the world stage.
Fans can look forward to witnessing not only Basiyalo’s debut but also the collective efforts of the team, united in their passion for the sport and determination to uphold Fiji’s rugby legacy.
