Young Fijian rugby talent Isikeli Basiyalo has officially joined the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team for the upcoming Hong Kong 7s tournament. His selection, announced by head coach Osea Kolinisau, marks a significant milestone for the 21-year-old development player, who recently became part of the extended squad alongside fellow Drua player Aisea Nawai.

Basiyalo, a forward, was informed about his call-up by Drua head coach Glen Jackson, who communicated the interest of Kolinisau in integrating him into the 7s setup. Expressing his enthusiasm, Basiyalo remarked, “When I was called, I didn’t believe it at first, but I was actually happy and keen. I’ve always wanted to try sevens, so I’m glad to be here and learning a lot.”

Along with Basiyalo and Nawai, the squad also includes the returning Manueli Maisamoa and Alusio Vakadranu, bringing a total of 13 players for the tournament. Other notable members of the team are Jeremaia Matana, Kavekini Tanivanuakula, and Apete Narogo, who has made a name for himself as the standout player at the recent Fiji Bitter Nahehevia 7s.

As preparations intensify for the Hong Kong 7s, set for March 28-30, Kolinisau has emphasized the importance of these young players fitting well within the team dynamics, suggesting that their paths to selection will be based on their performance during training.

This development is a positive sign for Fijian rugby, reflecting their commitment to nurturing fresh talent while maintaining the depth of experience within the squad. Fans are filled with hope as new players like Basiyalo and Nawai seek to contribute to Fiji’s rich rugby legacy on the international stage. The combination of emerging talent and experienced players bodes well for the team’s prospects in Hong Kong, promising an exciting tournament ahead.
