Fijian Rugby’s Rising Star: Could Karawalevu Join Drua?

Flying Fijians fullback Vuate Karawalevu’s impressive defensive skills and accurate kicking during their recent win against Samoa have drawn attention. Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson hinted at the possibility of Karawalevu joining the team next season. The 23-year-old, a former captain at Marist Brothers High School and a gold medallist in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics, has made his mark in rugby.

Jackson noted, “He (Vuate) will strengthen our backline.” Karawalevu played for the Kaiviti Silktails in 2021 and represented Fiji in the 2021 Rugby World Cup. Currently, he is under contract with the Waratahs for the next two seasons.

The Drua coach highlighted that 14 players from his team participated in the Flying Fijians’ 42-16 victory over Samoa in their first Pacific Nations Cup match on August 23 at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. The Drua team is set to hold its pre-season camp in Kadavu, where plans for renovations at their base aim to create an enhanced environment for developing world-class players.

Jackson welcomed the return of Joseva Tamani, who can play both back row and lock, boosting the team’s lineup. Recent signings include Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou, with Jackson praising Ravai’s experience as a valuable asset and mentor for the front row, as well as an impactful player.

The new center combination will feature Iosefo Masi alongside former Racing 92 center Tabuavou. Tabuavou made a strong impression in his second test against Samoa, showcasing speed, defense, and determination.

Meanwhile, new interim general manager Baden Stephenson announced plans for a 10s tournament set for December 13, aiming to make this event an international competition that includes Skipper teams.
