Fijian Drua Academy players Seremaia Salikoro and Sefania Naqama are set to gain valuable experience as they take on new opportunities at Tauranga Boys College, thanks to a full scholarship initiative resulting from a collaboration between the Fijian Drua and the educational institution.
Salikoro, a student from Natabua High School, has earned a three-year scholarship, while Naqama, who attends Sila Central High School in Nausori, has been awarded a two-year scholarship.
The selection of the duo was made by Regan Ward, the First XV Coach at Tauranga Boys College, along with Senior Rugby Coordinator Aidan Kuka, both of whom recognized the potential of Salikoro and Naqama during a week-long visit to the Drua.
Baden Stephenson, General Manager of the Fijian Drua, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing that it represents a transformative opportunity for these young athletes. He noted that both Salikoro and Naqama, who are 16 years old, will not only receive a high-quality education but will also experience a new culture while training in an elite rugby environment.
Stephenson reassured that both players will return to Fijian Drua at the end of their scholarships, with ongoing support and communication planned between the players and the rugby program while they are in New Zealand. He highlighted a shared commitment to nurturing both sporting talent and personal development.
This partnership not only provides these young athletes with a chance to shine on an international platform but also underscores the importance of education in shaping future leaders of the sporting world.
Overall, this venture reflects a promising future for Salikoro and Naqama, showing how sports can bridge cultural divides and offer opportunities for growth and development, both personally and professionally.
