Fijian Rugby Star’s Future in Doubt as Drua Coach Drops Hints

Flying Fijians fullback Vuate Karawalevu’s impressive cover defense and effective kicking during their recent win against Samoa have garnered attention. Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson indicated that the talented player from Dravuwalu, Kadavu, might join the team next season.

Karawalevu, a former captain at Marist Brothers High School and a gold medalist in the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics 400 meters, is seen as an asset for the Drua’s backline, according to Jackson. At 23 years old, he previously played for the Kaiviti Silktails in 2021 and represented the Fiji Bati in the 2021 Rugby World Cup. He is currently under contract with the Waratahs for two seasons.

The recent match saw Fiji triumph over Samoa with a score of 42-16 in their opening Pacific Nations Cup match on August 23 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Jackson noted that 14 Drua players were part of the victorious Flying Fijians squad, which is a positive sign for the team.

Looking ahead, the Drua will hold their pre-season camp in Kadavu, with plans for renovations at their base to foster a world-class training environment. The return of Joseva Tamani, who can play both back row and lock, is seen as a significant boost for the club.

Recent signings Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou have also been highlighted. Jackson praised Ravai’s experience and mentor capabilities, especially for the front row, while Tabuavou, who made his second test appearance against Samoa, demonstrated impressive pace and defensive skills.

New interim general manager Baden Stephenson has announced plans for a 10s tournament scheduled for December 13 this year, aiming to make it an international event that includes teams from Skipper.
