Fijian Rugby Star Vuate Karawalevu Set for Drua Move?

Fiji’s national rugby team, the Flying Fijians, recently celebrated a standout performance from fullback Vuate Karawalevu during their win against Samoa. His impressive cover defense and precise kicking have garnered attention, and Glen Jackson, the head coach of Fijian Drua, has hinted at the possibility of Karawalevu joining the Drua for the upcoming season.

Karawalevu, a former captain of Marist Brothers High School and a gold medalist in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Championships, is currently in his second season with the Waratahs. Jackson praised Karawalevu’s potential impact on the Drua’s backline.

The Flying Fijians secured a convincing 42-16 victory over Samoa in their opening match of the Pacific Nations Cup on August 23 at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Jackson noted that 14 players from the Drua participated in the match, highlighting a strong connection between the teams.

Looking ahead, the Drua will hold a pre-season training camp in Kadavu, with plans for improvements to their training facilities to nurture top-tier talent. Jackson also welcomed back Joseva Tamani, who can play both back row and lock positions, boosting the team’s depth.

Additionally, the Drua has recently signed players Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou. Jackson expressed confidence in Ravai’s experience and mentorship for the front row, while the new centre duo of Iosefo Masi and Tabuavou is expected to be dynamic, with Tabuavou showcasing his skills in his recent test against Samoa.

Baden Stephenson, the interim general manager of Fijian Drua, announced plans for a 10s tournament scheduled for December 13, which aims to attract international participation, including teams from the Skipper competition.
