Vuate Karawalevu, the Flying Fijians fullback, has garnered attention for his impactful defensive plays and precise kicking during the recent match against Samoa. Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson indicated that Karawalevu, hailing from Dravuwalu, Kadavu, may join the team next season.
Karawalevu, who previously captained Marist Brothers High School rugby and won a gold medal in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics, is seen as a valuable addition to the backline. At 23 years old, he played for the Kaiviti Silktails in 2021 and represented Fiji Bati in the 2021 Rugby World Cup. He is currently signed with the Waratahs for two seasons.
Jackson noted that 14 Drua players were part of the victorious Flying Fijians squad against Samoa, highlighting a strong connection between the two teams. Fiji achieved a commanding 42-16 win over Samoa in their Pacific Nations Cup opener on August 23 at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
The Drua will conduct their pre-season camp in Kadavu, with plans for renovations at their base to create a better environment for developing world-class players. The return of Joseva Tamani, who can play both back row and lock, is also seen as a significant boost for the team.
Recently signed players Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou are expected to enhance the squad. Jacksom praised Ravai’s experience and mentorship, especially for the front row, while Tabuavou, who made a strong debut against Samoa, will partner with Iosefo Masi in the center.
Baden Stephenson, the new interim general manager of Fijian Drua, announced plans for a 10s tournament on December 13, aiming to make it an international event that includes Skipper teams.
