Ponipate Loganimasi made a pivotal decision to pursue rugby instead of attending university, a choice that his father, Joeli Kalougata, wholeheartedly supported. In under two years, Loganimasi has made a significant impact on the international rugby scene.
Earlier this year, he secured an Olympic silver medal as a member of the men’s rugby sevens team and was notably the sole Fijian player recognized in the World Rugby Men’s Sevens Dream Team of the Year, which was revealed recently. His impressive year continued at the Pacific Nations Cup in September, where he made his debut for the Flying Fijians against Japan, contributing two tries to their 41-17 victory and helping them retain the title.
Loganimasi signed with the Fijian Drua in October, marking another milestone in his burgeoning career. Born in Nabua, Cakaudrove, and raised in Lovoni, Ono-i-Lau, the 26-year-old has demonstrated exceptional talent and determination.
Kalougata expressed pride in his son’s accomplishments, noting that the family had advised Loganimasi to pursue higher education at Brigham Young University in Utah, USA. However, they also encouraged him to follow his passion for rugby. Kalougata shared some advice he offered to his son: to seek divine guidance in all his endeavors while emphasizing the importance of hard work, humility, and being open to learning.
Loganimasi’s athletic talents are further complemented by his accomplishments in school sports; he is also a gold medalist in the 200m event at the Coca-Cola Games during his junior year at Navatu Secondary School. He has a diverse athletic background, having participated in rugby and indoor basketball during his high school years.
Other notable players joining Loganimasi on the Dream Team include Selvyn Davids from South Africa, Antoine Dupont from France, Aaron Grandidier Nkanang from France, Terry Kennedy from Ireland, Nathan Lawson from Australia, and Matías Osadczuk from Argentina.
This story is an inspiring reminder that following one’s passion can lead to significant achievements and recognition, and that support from family combined with hard work can create pathways to success. Loganimasi’s journey serves as motivation for young athletes to pursue their dreams and make choices that align with their passion.
