In just over a year since arriving in France, 18-year-old Setareki Turagacoke has quickly established himself in the rugby world. The former Lelean Memorial School player made his debut in France’s Top 14 league and, more recently, earned his first Test cap with the Fiji national team, the FIJI Water Flying Fijians.

Turagacoke joined the team as a last-minute replacement for the injured lock Isoa Nasilasila and made an immediate impact, scoring one of the five tries during Fiji’s 33-19 victory over Spain at José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid. His performance reflects his exceptional talent and adaptability, showcasing the depth of skill in Fiji’s rugby program.

Head coach Mick Byrne noted that patience was crucial for the team’s success. After trailing 7-10 at halftime, the Fijians regrouped and scored four unanswered tries in the second half. The coach emphasized the importance of sticking to their game plan despite early mistakes. Caleb Muntz successfully converted four of the five tries, with contributions from Sireli Maqala, Sam Matavesi, and captain Waisea Nayacalevu.

Looking ahead, Fiji will face Ireland in their final Test match at Aviva Stadium, Dublin. This match will mark the sixth encounter between the two teams, with Ireland having won all five previous meetings. Their latest match in the 2022 Autumn Series ended in a 35-17 defeat for Fiji.

Captain Nayacalevu expressed respect for the Spanish team’s dynamics, remarking on their speed and physicality, which necessitated rigorous preparation.

With promising young talent like Turagacoke rising through the ranks, the future for Fijian rugby appears bright. The team’s resolve and commitment to improvement provide hope as they continue to compete at higher levels.

In summary, Setareki Turagacoke has made significant strides in his rugby career in France and with the national team. The team’s upcoming match against Ireland will be a key opportunity to showcase their growth and resilience.
