Fijian Rugby Star Could Join Drua: What’s Next?

Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson has acknowledged the impressive performance of Flying Fijians fullback Vuate Karawalevu, particularly highlighting his strong cover defense and effective kicking during the recent victory over Samoa. Jackson suggested that the talented player from Dravuwalu, Kadavu, could potentially join the Drua next season.

Karawalevu, who previously captained the Marist Brothers High School rugby team and won a gold medal in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics, has already made a name for himself. He is 23 years old and played for the Kaiviti Silktails in 2021, also representing the Fiji Bati in the 2021 Rugby World Cup. Currently, he is signed with the Waratahs for two seasons.

Jackson noted that 14 players from the Drua squad participated in the Flying Fijians’ recent 42-16 win over Samoa in the first match of the Pacific Nations Cup held on August 23 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Looking ahead, he shared plans for the Drua’s pre-season camp to take place in Kadavu, with renovations underway at their base to create a better environment for developing top-tier players.

The return of Joseva Tamani, capable of playing in both back row and lock positions, has been seen as a positive addition to the club. Recent signings for the Drua include Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou, with Jackson praising Ravai for his experience and mentoring potential for the front row.

A new center combination featuring Iosefo Masi and Tabuavou, who demonstrated impressive skills during his second test appearance against Samoa, is also on the horizon. In addition, new interim general manager Baden Stephenson announced plans for a 10s tournament set for December 13, aimed at an international showcase that will involve Skipper teams.
