Fijian Rugby Rising Star: Is Vuate Karawalevu Joining the Drua?

Vuate Karawalevu, the fullback for the Flying Fijians, has garnered attention for his impressive defensive skills and kicking during their recent triumph over Samoa. Glen Jackson, head coach of the Fijian Drua, has indicated that there is a chance the talented player from Dravuwalu, Kadavu could join the team in the upcoming season.

Karawalevu, who previously captained Marist Brothers High School’s rugby team and clinched the gold medal in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics, is recognized for his contributions. “He will strengthen our backline,” Jackson remarked.

At 23, Karawalevu played for the Kaiviti Silktails in 2021 and represented Fiji Bati in the 2021 Rugby World Cup. He is currently under contract with the Waratahs for two seasons. Jackson noted that 14 Drua players were part of the victorious Flying Fijians squad that defeated Samoa 42-16 in their first match of the Pacific Nations Cup on August 23 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

The Drua team will conduct its pre-season camp in Kadavu, with plans for renovations at their training facility to create an improved environment for developing world-class players, according to Jackson. The return of Joseva Tamani is a significant advantage for the club, as he is versatile in playing both back row and lock positions.

Recent signings for the Drua include Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou. Jackson highlighted Ravai’s extensive experience and ability to serve as a mentor to the front row, along with being a powerful impact player. The new centre pairing will feature Iosefo Masi alongside former Racing 92 player Tabuavou, who showcased remarkable speed, defense, and determination in his second test appearance against Samoa.

Baden Stephenson, the new interim general manager for Fijian Drua, announced plans for a 10s tournament scheduled for December 13, aiming to transform it into an international event that includes Skipper teams.
