Promising rugby talent Maleli Nauvasi has been chosen to participate in the Fijian Drua development program. His remarkable play in the Vodafone Deans competition, where he contributed to Queen Victoria School’s under-18 championship victory this year, drew the attention of Drua selectors.
In the final match against Nasinu Secondary School, Nauvasi’s exceptional performance earned him the Player of the Match award. He further showcased his abilities by representing the Fiji Schoolboys U18 team in two matches against the Australia Schoolboys U18.
Demonstrating versatility, Nauvasi has played multiple positions, including flyhalf, wing, and fullback during his tenure at QVS, highlighting his adaptability and skill on the field. Excited about joining the Drua Development program, he expressed his gratitude for this opportunity.
Ifereimi Rawaqa, the Fijian Drua development and skills coach, commended Nauvasi for his natural talent, discipline, and excellence in performance, expressing optimism about his potential in the professional arena. Rawaqa remarked, “I’m delighted to welcome Maleli Nauvasi to our Drua development program; he has shown exceptional promise, not only with his natural talent but also with his discipline on the field.”
Nauvasi’s impressive track record in the Deans and the Fiji Schoolboys U18 has generated excitement within the Drua organization as they anticipate his ongoing growth and journey in rugby.
Fijian Drua general manager Baden Stephenson noted the importance of Nauvasi’s commitment to the club, especially in light of interest from overseas teams. His decision to remain with the Drua reinforces his dedication to progressing from the U18 level to the Flying Fijians.
Nauvasi joins a talented group of 10 young players in the Drua development squad. This program will provide him with a salary, training opportunities with the Super Rugby Pacific squad, and participation in provincial competitions such as the Skipper Cup and Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific.
The initiative aims to equip these athletes with the necessary resources, coaching, and environment needed to transition to professional rugby and make a notable impact in the future.
