The Fijian Drua has announced the exciting news that two of its academy players, Seremaia Salikoro and Sefanaia Naqama, have been awarded scholarships to the esteemed Tauranga Boys College in New Zealand. This achievement is part of a strategic partnership established between the Drua and the college, aimed at providing valuable opportunities for young athletes.
Salikoro, who studies at Natabua High School, has secured a three-year scholarship, while Naqama, from Sila Central High School in Nausori, will enjoy a two-year scholarship. The players were selected by Tauranga Boys College’s First XV coach, Regan Ward, and Senior Rugby coordinator Aidan Kuka, who identified their talent during a week spent with the Drua team.
General manager of the Fijian Drua, Baden Stephenson, expressed great enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that it marks a transformative opportunity for both players. He emphasized that Salikoro and Naqama, both 16 years old, will benefit from an exceptional education, exposure to a different culture, and training in a top-tier rugby environment.
Stephenson assured that the Drua would maintain a close relationship with Salikoro and Naqama throughout their time in New Zealand, working together to enhance their rugby development while promoting good values both on and off the field. Following their scholarship duration, both players are set to return to the Drua.
Kuka shared his excitement about the partnership, highlighting Tauranga Boys College’s commitment to fostering the potential of its students through a supportive educational and athletic environment. He remarked on the college’s dedication to transforming ordinary boys into remarkable men, and expressed eagerness to welcome Salikoro and Naqama in 2025.
This initiative not only signifies the potential for individual growth in these athletes but also highlights the collaborative efforts between educational institutions and sports organizations in nurturing the next generation of talent. The synergy between educational development and athletic training exemplifies a promising path for young athletes both in Fiji and internationally.
