Fijian athlete Yeshnil Karan has recently completed a transformative three-week training camp in Adelaide, Australia, under the mentorship of Olympic steeplechaser Matthew Clarke. This marks a significant milestone in Karan’s career as he dedicates himself to enhancing his skills in steeplechase, an event that has gained newfound importance for him despite not being featured in the upcoming 2025 Pacific Mini Games.

Karan, a three-time gold medalist at the Pacific Games, was introduced to Clarke through family connections, notably his grandmother’s ties to Fiji. This unique opportunity arose during the 2024 Oceania Championships, where Karan met Clarke, leading to a focused training regimen that improved his hurdle technique and pacing immensely. It was particularly striking for Karan, who had only previously engaged in two hurdle sessions.

Clarke praised Karan’s adaptability and dedication, noting that he possesses the fundamental qualities required to excel in steeplechase. The training camp included sessions with elite runners from Australia and New Zealand, further refining Karan’s approach and technique.

Despite the setback of the steeplechase not being part of the Mini Games, Karan is ambitious about making it his primary event in future competitions. His growth as an athlete is part of a pattern seen in his recent achievements, including setting personal bests at major events and ranking among Fiji’s top athletes in long-distance runs.

As Karan continues his journey, his experience serves not just as a personal achievement, but also as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring athletes across Fiji. His story reflects the power of perseverance and the importance of seizing opportunities for growth, projecting optimism about the future of Fijian athletics on the global stage. This journey illustrates how hard work and dedication can pave the way for remarkable accomplishments in sports.
