Young Fijian rugby talent Isikeli Basiyalo has made headlines by securing a spot on the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team for the upcoming HSBC Hong Kong Sevens tournament, set to take place from March 28-30. His inclusion, announced by head coach Osea Kolinisau, marks a significant milestone for the 21-year-old development player who recently joined the squad alongside fellow Drua player Aisea Nawai.
Basiyalo, who plays as a forward, was introduced to the national setup after Drua head coach Glen Jackson communicated Kolinisau’s interest in evaluating his abilities in the 7s format. Reflecting on his selection, Basiyalo expressed his excitement, saying, “It’s just been three weeks being part of the training squad with my older brothers. I have learnt a whole lot of things, especially patience, hard work, and everything else I need to know to be part of the squad.”
In addition to Basiyalo and Nawai, the team also welcomes back Manueli Maisamoa and Alusio Vakadranu, rounding out a 13-member squad that includes notable players such as Jeremaia Matana, Kavekini Tanivanuakula, and Joseva Talacolo. These young talents are joining experienced players as Fiji prepares to compete against formidable opponents like the USA, Ireland, and Argentina in their tournament pool.
With members of the extended squad who did not make the final selection gearing up to play for their clubs in the 49th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s, the anticipation builds for Fiji’s effort in Hong Kong. Fans across the globe can watch the tournament action live via pay-per-view.
This new chapter not only signifies personal progress for Basiyalo but also illustrates Fiji’s ongoing commitment to nurturing emerging talent, positioning the team for future successes. As young players embrace the challenge of representing Fiji on an international stage, there is hope for a bright future for Fijian rugby, blending fresh energy with seasoned experience.
