The popular adage, ‘Third time’s the charm’, exemplifies the importance of determination and never giving up, no matter how insurmountable the challenge may seem. This perfectly describes the journey of Adi Varanisese Likuyameyame Ravula Rayacarogo, a young woman who has faced life’s adversities yet still managed to fulfill her dreams.

Born and raised in Visa, Vugalei, Tailevu and with maternal ties to Vanuabalavu in Lau, 25-year-old Ms. Rayacarogo was brought up solely by her grandmother after her parents parted ways. She completed her primary and secondary education before embarking upon a trade diploma in custom services at the Fiji National University in 2018. However, her plans were foiled due to financial constraints.

Despite facing multiple job rejections, Ms. Rayacarogo remained tenacious. With police recruitment underway, she applied and was initially turned down twice, but her third attempt proved victorious. Starting her training at Nasova on February 25 this year, she graduated on June 14 as part of 223 other strong women and men from Fiji and Tuvalu at the Fiji Police Training Academy.

Her long-held aspiration of becoming a police officer was often shadowed by the stringent height requirements. However, she found motivation in her late grandfather’s belief in her potential as a police officer. His words were what propelled her not to surrender and make one more attempt to achieve her dream.

In an emotional turn of events, her parents reunited after six years on the day of her passing out parade. She recounts this event with happiness and relief, expressing her gratitude that they were present on her special day.

Today, as a proud constable, her ambition in the next 10 years is to advance to the position of a corporal or sergeant. Alongside her career, she enjoys socializing and spending time with friends and family. As she embarks upon her journey at the forensic science unit at Nasova, she acknowledges the challenges that come with a new environment but is simultaneously excited.

Ms. Rayacarogo’s story serves as inspiration to many, proving that rejection does not signify the end, and that every individual deserves to achieve their own measure of happiness.
