Fijian troops deployed in the Golan Heights under the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) continue to be safe despite the recent upheaval in Syria. The situation follows a remarkable shift in power as rebel forces captured the capital, Damascus, leading to the reported fleeing of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is believed to be seeking asylum in Russia after 50 years of his family’s rule.

Fijian Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, assured that he has been updated about the situation by the Commander of Joint Task Force Command and representatives on the ground. He indicated that a Fijian officer previously stationed in Damascus has safely returned to Camp Faour, underscoring the efficacy of their peacekeeping operations. All Fijian troops, including those at the headquarters in Camp Faour, are safe and accounted for.

While the operational area remains calm yet tense, Tikoduadua emphasized that there is no immediate threat to Fijian peacekeepers. They are in close coordination with the United Nations and relevant agencies to closely monitor the situation. Comprehensive contingency plans are ready should security conditions change.

Recently, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) undertook operations in the Golan Heights’ demilitarized zone to counteract rebel group activities, but these actions did not target UN positions, ensuring the safety of UN personnel. Efforts are underway to recover any equipment affected during a rebel infiltration, while the IDF has also been enhancing security in the buffer zone, bolstering the safety of UN forces in the area.

In his statement, Tikoduadua praised the commitment of the Fijian troops operating under these challenging conditions, reflecting Fiji’s enduring dedication to maintaining international peace and security. The local communities around UN positions have shown solidarity with the peacekeepers, demonstrating a shared commitment towards stability.

This situation, while serious, illustrates the resilience and commitment of peacekeeping forces amidst geographic volatility. The ongoing support from local communities serves as a beacon of hope and highlights the critical role of peacekeepers in fostering stability in conflict zones.
