Fijian troops deployed in the Golan Heights under the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) are reported to be safe amid the ongoing crisis in Syria. The situation escalated recently with the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s government, which had been in power for over 50 years. Insurgent forces have seized the capital, Damascus, following an impressive advance that unfolded in less than two weeks.
With President Assad reportedly seeking asylum in Russia, his absence has been noted as rebel groups launched a significant offensive beginning from a small area in north-western Syria. In light of these developments, Fiji’s Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, confirmed that he received updates on the situation from the Commander of Joint Task Force Command and representatives stationed in the Golan Heights.
Tikoduadua highlighted the successful return of a Fijian officer previously based in Damascus to Camp Faour, underscoring the effectiveness of the peacekeeping contingency measures in place. All Fijian personnel stationed with UNDOF and UNTSO, including those at Camp Faour headquarters, are secure and accounted for, despite the tense operational climate.
The Minister assured that there is no immediate threat to Fijian peacekeepers. Active coordination continues with the United Nations and other involved parties to keep a close check on developments. Comprehensive plans are prepared for personnel safety should the security environment change.
Furthermore, Tikoduadua mentioned that the Israeli Defence Forces conducted operations in the demilitarised zone to counter activities from rebel factions over the weekend. He emphasized that United Nations positions were not targeted during these operations and that UN personnel, particularly at Observation Post 71, remained unharmed. Efforts are ongoing to retrieve equipment impacted by recent rebel activities.
The IDF’s enhanced security measures within the buffer zone have bolstered the safety of UNDOF and UNTSO teams. Local communities near UN positions have shown support for the Fijian peacekeepers, working alongside them to sustain a stable environment.
Tikoduadua commended the dedication of the Fijian troops, which showcases Fiji’s longstanding commitment to fostering international peace and security in such challenging situations.
This article serves to reassure the public about the safety of Fijian peacekeepers while highlighting the importance of international cooperation in maintaining peace. Despite the fluctuating situation in Syria, the commitment to peacekeeping stands resilient, showcasing a collective effort to stabilize the region.
