Fijian troops deployed in the Golan Heights as part of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) are currently safe amid the ongoing developments in Syria. This news follows the recent fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which had been in power for over 50 years, as rebel forces successfully captured the capital, Damascus, in a rapid advance that took less than two weeks.
Reports suggest that President Assad has fled to Russia, seeking asylum, particularly in light of his absence while Islamist militant groups launched a significant offensive from a small enclave in north-western Syria. Amid these developments, Fijian Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, confirmed that he received briefings from military leaders about the situation on the ground.
The Minister reported that a Fijian officer had returned safely to Camp Faour, underscoring the effectiveness of their peacekeeping measures. All Fijian personnel in the Golan Heights, including those stationed at the headquarters, are safe and accounted for, with the area described as calm yet tense.
Tikoduadua reassured that there is currently no immediate threat to Fijian peacekeepers, and they are maintaining close cooperation with the United Nations and other relevant parties to keep abreast of the situation. He emphasized the existence of robust contingency plans to protect the personnel if necessary.
In addition, he noted that the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have conducted operations in the demilitarized zone to address rebel activities but confirmed that UN positions were not targeted, ensuring the safety of UN personnel, including those stationed at Observation Post 71. Recovery efforts are underway for equipment that was temporarily impacted due to rebel infiltration.
The IDF’s provision of additional security in the buffer zone has notably enhanced the safety of UNDOF and UNTSO staff. Furthermore, local communities near UN positions have expressed support for the Fijian peacekeepers, aiding in efforts to sustain stability in the region.
Minister Tikoduadua commended the dedication and resilience of the Fijian troops in facing these challenging circumstances, reflecting Fiji’s longstanding commitment to international peace and security.
In summary, the situation emphasizes resilience and cooperation in maintaining peace in a tumultuous region, highlighting Fiji’s role in supporting stability within international peacekeeping efforts. This serves as a beacon of hope that even in times of crisis, dedicated individuals can work together toward a safer future.
