Fijian troops stationed in the Golan Heights as part of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) are reported to be safe amid ongoing turmoil in Syria. This situation follows significant developments, including the apparent collapse of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government, which has ruled for over 50 years. Rebels rapidly captured the capital, Damascus, in a remarkable advance lasting less than two weeks. Reports suggest that President Assad may have fled to Russia seeking asylum.

In response to these developments, Fiji’s Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, provided reassurance regarding the safety of Fijian personnel. He mentioned that a Fijian officer previously based in Damascus was successfully evacuated and has returned to Camp Faour in Lebanon. ALL Fijian troops with UNDOF and UNTSO are confirmed to be secure and accounted for, with the operational area described as “calm but tense,” indicating ongoing caution.

Tikoduadua emphasized that there is currently no immediate threat to Fijian peacekeepers. Coordination with the United Nations and other relevant parties continues to monitor the situation closely. He noted that robust contingency measures are in place to protect personnel in case the security landscape changes drastically.

Over the weekend, the Israeli Defence Forces conducted operations in the demilitarized zone of the Golan Heights to preempt rebel activities. Importantly, positions held by the United Nations were not targeted during these operations, and local communities nearby are reportedly supportive of the Fijian peacekeepers, enhancing efforts to maintain stability in the region.

Minister Tikoduadua praised the dedication and commitment of the Fijian troops in these difficult circumstances, highlighting Fiji’s strong commitment to promoting international peace and security.

In summary, Fijian troops remain safe in a region marked by significant political upheaval, showcasing the effectiveness of their peacekeeping measures and the support of local communities. This situation not only underscores the resilience of Fiji’s commitment to peacekeeping but also reflects a crucial moment for stability in a volatile region. With continued coordination and support, there is hope that peace efforts will prevail.
