Minister for Defence Pio Tikoduadua has assured that Fijian soldiers serving in the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force are not impacted by the recent rise in tensions across the Middle East. During a parliamentary session this week, Tikoduadua highlighted that currently, only one Fijian officer is stationed with UNIFIL in Lebanon, alongside personnel from the Fijian Service working with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO).
Tikoduadua emphasized that Fijian troops are well-equipped, secure, and diligently following Standard Operating Procedures. They also benefit from comprehensive contingency plans designed for potential evacuation scenarios. The Ministry of Defence maintains regular communication with the headquarters of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. The joint taskforce commander at Blackrock is responsible for overseeing Fijian peacekeeping forces deployed across the Middle East and globally.
The Minister reiterated that ensuring the safety and well-being of peacekeepers is a top priority for the Coalition Government. The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is actively receiving daily updates from personnel in the field, maintaining their readiness to address any evolving challenges promptly.
Moreover, discussions are ongoing with the United Arab Emirates regarding the temporary deployment of RFMF troops and equipment to bolster readiness in the region. A government delegation is scheduled to visit the Middle East early next year to evaluate the local conditions, assess reinforcement strategies, and convey gratitude for the support extended to the Fijian peacekeepers.
Additionally, Tikoduadua mentioned that they are considering sending seven of the 14 Bushmasters to the UNDOF mission area; however, progress is complicated by restrictions imposed by both Syrian and Israeli authorities concerning the number of vehicles permitted to enter designated zones.
This proactive approach signals the government’s commitment to the safety of its military personnel while fulfilling their peacekeeping roles on an international stage. The commitment to evaluation and reinforcement in response to emerging challenges reflects responsible governance and care for those serving abroad.
In summary, the Fijian troops remain safe and well-prepared, with active measures in place to ensure their well-being amid the growing tensions in the Middle East. The dedication shown by the Fijian government highlights a strong commitment to peacekeeping efforts and the safety of their personnel.
