Fijian Paralympian Irene Mar Shines with a Historic 7th Place Finish

Fijian Paralympian Irene Mar concluded her remarkable performance at the 2024 Summer Paris Paralympics with a world ranking of 7th. Mar’s journey came to an end in the quarterfinals of the Women’s K44-57kg category after a challenging match against Turkey’s world number 2, Gamze Gurdal.

The 19-year-old athlete gained attention earlier in the tournament when she caused a significant upset by defeating Ukraine’s world number 7, Yuliya Lypetska, in the round of 16, which earned her a place in the quarterfinals.

In the bronze medal repechage round, Mar met another formidable opponent, Kamilya Dosmalova from Kazakhstan, who is ranked third in the world. Despite her strong performance, Mar was ultimately defeated with a score of 12-6.
