Naibili Vatunisolo, a 34-year-old para-athlete from Nadroga, Fiji, has made remarkable strides in her athletic career since her life changed dramatically following an accident in 2010. Initially never intending to compete again, her journey back into sports began with an introduction to para-athletics by coach Fred Fatiaki in 2016.
Vatunisolo has since become a prominent figure in Fijian para-athletics, excelling in disciplines such as javelin, shot put, and discus. She has represented Fiji on international platforms including the World Para Athletics Championships and the Commonwealth Games, and is currently preparing for the 2024 Paris Paralympics. Her proudest achievement to date includes winning a bronze medal in the discus event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
This year, Vatunisolo achieved a significant milestone by setting a new Oceania record in shot put with a throw of 9.19 meters at the Paris Paralympic Games. Despite facing challenges such as adverse weather conditions during the competition, where she finished in 10th place, she remained determined to continue improving her performance. Her efforts paid off during the Fiji national championship, where she improved her javelin throw from 21 meters to an impressive 22.55 meters, well above the qualifying mark for the 2025 Pacific Mini Games.
While her journey has not been without its hardships—including the loss of her mother in 2023—Vatunisolo draws strength from her family. She acknowledges the pivotal role her parents play in her life and training. “My biggest supporters are my parents. My mum was my strength and after she passed, it was very hard. But I kept going,” she reflected.
Balancing her athletic pursuits with her studies, Vatunisolo is a first-year student at FNU’s Nasese campus, working toward a Certificate in Front Office Operations while maintaining her training schedule. Looking ahead, she is optimistic about her future competitions, including the upcoming Palau Mini Games in June.
Vatunisolo’s story is one of resilience and determination. Her journey exemplifies how athletes can overcome adversity and continue to excel in their fields, setting new records and inspiring others along the way. As she prepares for her next competitions, the community eagerly anticipates her future achievements and contributions to para-athletics in Fiji.
